The best Lake Superior views!
If you’re vacationing in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, odds are you’ve gotten up close and personal with Lake Superior. She’s a magnificent lake, and time on her shore is never misspent.
Ready to check her out from above?
The best place to see Lake Superior from any sort of height is just outside of Marquette, MI. It’s called Sugarloaf Mountain, and the climb is a must-do on any UP itinerary.
Getting to Sugarloaf Mountain
You can reach this hike easily by driving north from Marquette. It’s so close to the town that you might not even lose cell service!Â
Its proximity to Marquette (and the stellar views at the end of the trail) make this hike extremely popular, so be prepared to run into some crowds. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of mountain for everyone. In the height of summer, you may need to pack a little extra patience, as the stairs can get a little backed up. But it’s still absolutely worth the visit! If you struggle to find parking at the trailhead, there’s an overflow lot that’s just a short walk down the road. Neither are a bad place to leave your car.
The Climb
Now, remember that the hike is called Sugarloaf Mountain. This does mean that the hike is almost entirely an uphill climb. But as far as ascents go, this one is incredibly accessible. Lots of the pathways are paved, or constructed out of study wooden staircases. You won’t need any special equipment, just a good pair of shoes and a can-do attitude.
And when you reach the top, I guarantee that you’ll decide that the climb was worth it. The top of Sugarloaf Mountain is a large rocky plateau. There are wooden platforms facing every direction, and the view of Lake Superior from that height is truly incredible! Spend a good long while up there, admiring the view, taking photos, and resting your legs on the benches. Then enjoy the much easier descent back to your car!
